Read Time:3 Minute, 12 Second

The Toriki restaurant is not an easy place to find if you are not a local or if you can’t read any simple Japanese characters as there is no Romanji to help. It is all in Hiragana and not to mention that it is quietly tug away in a corner.

See what i mean?

This restaurant is really tiny and no frills but the food is excellent. It is a omakase type course where you do not get to choose. I think it is the only Michelin Star Yakitori in Japan. However, of course you can order extra if it is not enough. The whole course of 12 skewers of chicken and vegetables will take more than 2 hours so just make sure you are not in a rush. Yakitori goes best with beer.

yes, the restaurant is that small
The appetizer

The first dish is the appetizer with some vegetable, radish and perhaps pickles. Sorry, not paying too much attention to the supporting cast.

Green pepper

Next is the green pepper with some Japanese Onion toppings by the side

The raw chicken is really nice. The chicken served here are all special homebred chicken. The usual serving is raw but we ordered medium raw as we are afraid it may not go well with some of us. Even though it is medium raw, it taste great and the meat so tender.

Chicken Skin and Onions

There is really something different about Japanese vegetables. It taste just delicious. Not sure if it is due to the special care given or it is just the weather or perhaps both. The chicken thigh is tender and very tasty.

Chicken gizzard

Not many are fans of the chicken gizzard but I simply love it. I love all the organ stuffs. Gizzard is the digestive tract of the the chicken and it is muscles. Probably that explains the texture which i love. It is supposed to be the most nutritious part of the chicken.

Radish

Well, this is radish so i am not exactly sure how to differentiate this radish from other radish so…..let’s move on.

Unbelievable tomatoes

Of all things, I was really stunned by the tomatoes. It is so juicy and sweet which makes me wonder if they added any sugar in it. It is simply heavenly. I have never tasted any tomatoes that sweet in my life. Maybe that is why you can see some of the super market charging a few thousand dollars for a honey mellon.

Mushroom and quail eggs

The next dish is kind of bland. I was expecting more from the mushroom but i don’t find great flavour there. The quail eggs are also kind of ordinary.

Chicken skin

Most ladies will remove the chicken skin whenever they have chicken but the Japanese made a specialty out of this. Grilled chicken skin is super sinful but one of my favourite. Guess i need to hit the gym a few more times this week.

Egg plants with meat balls

I love the Yakitori meat balls but this does not come with the raw eggs for dipping so i find something missing. The grilled egg plant is fantastic. Never had it grilled so this is something really refreshing.

Chicken wings

The chicken wings are skewed in a special way where you can remove the bones just by peeling them off one by one. That’s pretty creative way to present the wings. It is also flavour and chicken meat tasted really fresh and tender.

Ginko nuts

Ginko nuts are what the Japanese love but i still can’t totally appreciate it especially they tasted kind of bitter.

Chicken Soup

The meal is finally complete with a bowl of chicken soup.

The aftermath

Here’s the menu for the set course. Only those with black dots will be served.

  1. Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this blog. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very difficult to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appearance. I must say you’ve done a amazing job with this. Also, the blog loads very quick for me on Firefox. Excellent Blog!
